36. Kilcrohane

The nearest village to Sheep's Head, far out in Dunmanus Bay, and here the road ends. Walk if you like to the tip of the headland: you will feel as if you are on the edge of the known world, with only the ocean beyond and below. Aline of telegraph poles walk oddly over the precipice to an invisible lighthouse below the cliffs. It is here at Ahakista that there is a memorial for those who lost their lives in the 1985 Air India disaster off the Irish coast. Created like a garden of remembrance for families to spend a quiet time of peace. The centrepiece is Sundial by Cork Sculptor Ken Thompson, the garden leads within stone walls down to the water's edge.

There is a magnificent drive northwards over Selfin - part of it known was the Goat's path - and along Bantry Bay towards Bantry town.

37. Larne

Larne is both the most modern and the most ancient of places.

The name of the town is believed to have derived from the prince called Lathar, son of an ancient Irish king, who was granted the lands by his father. The area came to be called Lathar-na, meaning the lands of Lathar, and this has been anglicised to Larne.

Archaeology has produced remains and artifacts in the area suggesting an ancient culture which lived close to the shores of the North Channel and traded with others around the coasts of Scotland.

Nowadays the trade links still remain, as the port is one of the most modern roll-on/roll-off terminals in the United Kingdom, and ships daily take passenger sand goods to and from the coast of Scotland. Today the town combines a historical past with modern port, shopping and leisure facilities. In addition to having man attractions of its own, it is also ideally located for those wishing to use Larne or surrounding areas as a base to further explore the Glens of Antrim and scenic Antrim Coast Road, which stretches from the town northward sthrough the nine glens.

38. Lisburn

On the Lagan upstream from Belfast, Lisburn is an individual town with a Tuesday market. Few buildings survived a devestating fire in 1707. The development of the linen industry in the area is a permanent exhibition. Lisburn is now very much part of Belfast's ever increasing commuter belt.
