Lyric Theatre55 ridgeway Street, Stranmillis Embankment, Co. AntrimPYGMALION With songs and music, Pygmalion became 'My Fair Lady', one of the finest musicals ever written. Without them, Shaw's brilliant comedy has always been one of his most popular and entertaining plays. The battle of wits (and words!) between Professor Higgins and flower-seller Eliza Doolittle contrasts two extraordinary people from opposite sides of the social spectrum. Higgins is only too pleased to accept Colonel Pickering's challenge of passing Eliza off as a duchess at an embassy ball, and so begins one of the most fascinating relationships ever invented. Universal enthusiasm has greeted this wonderful production from the Lyric Theatre Belfast. 'A delight', 'beautifully costumed', 'delightfully considered performances', 'it's luvverly!' are just a few of the many accolades which have been bestowed by the critics. ANNIE - THE MUSICAL Music by Charles Strouse. Lyrics by Martin Charnin Book by Thomas Meehan. 'Annie' the little girl with nothing in the world except boundless optimism, who finds happiness through her energy and sense of fun. It's a wonderful musical, with great songs and hilarious characters. Our last two summer productions at the Lyric, 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat' and 'Oliver!' were both big successes, so maybe you shouldn't wait to book your seats until tomorrow!. WAR OF WORDS "War of Words" is an action packed showcase, comprising extracts from A Level English, Theatre Studies, GCSE English and Drama, presented by our own youth theatre. A dynamic cast of fifty bring to vigorous theatrical life extracts from the world's best known plays and poetry, with a sometimes irreverent view of the pressure these great works place on students at the time of exams. THE PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD - John Millington Synge For this unique association with the Belfast Waterfront Hall which will launch The Studio with performances on January 20-22, we have chosen what has consistently been one of the most popular plays in our repertoire. Synge's affectionate satire of life in the West of Ireland in the early part of this century has proved to be universal in its appeal. This production will seek to capture all its energies, with live music, dance, and of course the essential poetry of Synge's lyrical and robust language. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM - William Shakespeare. Nick Bottom has an amazing dream of love-affairs and weddings, and he becomes a real ass in his ludicrous love making with the Queen of the Night. Shakespeare's most popular and glorious comedy plays on the tensions and terrors of pre-marital excitement, as well as providing some of the most wonderful poetry and hilarious comedy in all his plays. BY NATIONAL CONNECTIONS In conjuction with the Royal National Theatre and BT, the Lyric's 1997 Youth Theatre Festival will again be the most and largest and comprehensive festival of young people's theatre work in Northern Ireland featuring specially commissioned new plays, workshops and seminars, and climaxing with our own light-hearted award ceremony - the Cactus Awards.

Ould Lammas FairCo. AntrimWhy the fair should be held at the end of August rather than at the beginning, Lammas Day being 1st August, is uncertain, but it is thought that this may well have been due to the late harvest in the district. The practical side of the fair is given over to Sales of Sheep and Ponies while the visitor is drawn and entertained by the street stalls selling 'Dulse' a dried edible seaweed, and 'Yellow Man' a sweet confectionery, ornaments, clothes, bric-a-brac, fruit and many other items. The traffic on both days of the fair is very heavy, particularly if the weather is favourable. Special attention is given to car parking facilities and of necessity the Diamond and main thoroughfares are closed to motorists.

Hilden BreweryHilden House,, Hilden, Co. AntrimAnn and Seamus Scullion established Hilden Brewery in 1981. Today it is the only independent brewery in Ireland. It is set in the courtyard of Hilden House, a classic Georgian residence built in 1824 as the family home of the Barbour Linen Barons. The House and courtyard provide an unique historic setting for the brewery. One side of the courtyard now houses the Visitor Centre. Inside there is an exhibition of the craft and history of brewing and the Tap Room restaurant. Here visitors can enjoy their beer by a cosy fire or outside in the sunny cobbled courtyard. Our chef takes the same pride in his craft as we devote to our brewing. Lunches at Hilden are a unique and rewarding experience.
